The 1990s were a huge era for the movie industry. Many of the classic movies we watch today were released during this period and are considered masterpieces, no matter how many times we rewatch them.
The ‘90s also marked the success of many African American filmmakers (Spike Lee and the Hughes Brothers are among our personal favorites) as well as breakthrough performances from familiar faces like Denzel Washington, Eddie Murphy, and Will Smith.
John Singleton may have given us Boyz n the Hood in 1991, but if you think that’s it with the great ‘90s black movies, you’re dead wrong. Back when BIPOC were new to Hollywood (especially in leading roles) and still widely referred to with slurs, we were treated to a magical decade that produced some of the best black movies ever made.
