A Moving Drama on the Power of Connection
A moving drama about the power of human connection during turbulent times, “Empire of Light” is directed and written by Sam Mendes (“1917” and “Skyfall”). Hilary (Olivia Colman), a cinema manager struggling with her mental health, and Stephen (Michael Ward), a new hire who longs to leave this provincial town where he faces daily hardship, are set in a faded old cinema in an English coastal town during the early 1980s. Through their unlikely and tender relationship, Hilary and Stephen find a sense of belonging and come to understand how music, cinema, and community can heal.
