Oscar-winning screenwriter Dustin Lance Black revealed on Monday that he is recovering from a “serious head injury” that he suffered last month. He gave no details about how the injury happened but said that “the road back will be long.”
Black said in an Instagram posting that the injury put him out of commission for a while. He was last seen in public in July at Wimbledon and at Windsor Castle with his husband Tom Daly, the Olympic diving gold medalist.
As he continued: “Showing little improvement, my doctors ordered me to shut off my brain in hopes of it healing. This has been a challenging, frightening time for a creative type who depends on what’s in his skull to work, care and love.
“But this week my sweet, over the top husband took us to the Greek Islands to make me shut off. I can already feel this trip is a step in the right direction, and I finally feel safe sharing a bit again. Thank you for all of your love and patience. More to come. Promise.”
While he released no details about how he incurred the injury, it had been widely reported that Black was involved in an altercation at a bar in the UK with British TV star Teddy Edwardes, who claimed that Black had allegedly thrown a drink at her.
Black won an Oscar in 2008 for best screenplay for Milk, his film about the San Francisco gay activist Harvey Milk. The prolific writer is also the creator of Under the Banner of Heaven, a limited true-crime series by FX, and wrote the script for the forthcoming Rustin, a film directed by George C. Wolfe that narrates the life of gay civil-rights activist Bayard Rustin.
Directed by Laurent Bouzereau, Mama’s Boy, a film about Black’s early life as a gay Mormon growing up in Texas, is scheduled to premiere on October 13 at New York’s NewFest LGBTQ+ Film Festival.
